Im 26 girl and my dream is to become a hair stylist(complete hair care) and start a salon..how do i start ?? I just graduated from Cosmetology school back in July 06 so I think I can help. You need to look in the phonebook where you live and see if there is a Barber/Cosemtology program anywhere. Next, you will probably have to meet with an advisor to see about getting some type of monies for you to pay for school ( student loans, grants etc). Once that is squared away...Let the games begin..depending on where you live you will have to do at least 1,000 or more hours of "work"..from book work to work on real clients that come to that school and as your learning how to do hair, nails, pedicures, and facials you are also learning the State Boards...in order for you to get your temporary license you will have to pass a wriitten exam . Once you pass that you will have to pass a practical exam and that is kind of nerve wrecking but once you pass it ...It is smooth sailing from there..
As far as opening your own salon, I would wait and get as much experience as possible like working in a salon or barbershop or dayspa so when you feel like you have enough courage to venture... GO FOR IT!!!

My sister is a stylist and the first thing that you do is go to school, not college but a hair school, she had to drive 45 minutes every morning to get there but she did and now she is the most popular stylist in our county. Or phone the local education authority and ask them where you can attend courses.

Its classes but its all for what you want to do. You wont find a degree in it though...its just training...maybe a certification. As far as staring your own Salon or any buisness you need money.....money for a building, equipment, hire a staff.....its gonna take a lot but if it works out you could be pretty successfull. Check with local community colleges, some of them offer cosmetology programs. The classes teach everything from hairstyling/cutting/treatment, nails, skincare, chemistry, and lots of other things. After you finish the class you will be eligible to take the state board for licensing. As far as starting a salon, they do teach business management skills as part of a lot of cosmetology curriculums. I have been researching cosmetology schools myself and have decided to enroll part-time when I finish my current degree, which will be next year. Good luck!

learn the way a shop is run. build a good following, then
think of opening a salon.and it's not to late to start,I knew successful salon owners who started much later then you.

Some good ones in the US are Aveda academies, Vidal Sassoon academies, Alberto Culver, Pivot Point Academy, Paul Mitchell Academies. Look them up on the web.
If an excellent school is not an option a good "training for pay" program is the answer. Toni and Guy salons have some of the best training in the world for new graduates while you work. There are others too.

If you are sure this is what you wish to do than I would recommend going to a public beauty school. Like those offered by county vo-techs. They are much much cheaper than private schools and most shops train new grads in thier way of doing Do's. I started in a private school that closed in mid session and I finished in a vo tech. I had no trouble getting hired. You are a bit older than high school but aside from being the oldest in your class ther isn't any difference. Your age should help you get a job faster. You should be able to start working while you are finishhing up your training. Good luck and have fun at it.

Go to the schools and see witch one you like. Keep in mind that they all teach the same thing that is just the basic. They just need to teach you to pass the state boards.
As for the salon that will come with time. After you work in a salon you should know how to run one. Just keep your eyes open and learn as much as you can.
